Success stories ...
What did you like about the Beginner Half Marathon Training Program?
“Everything! It was well organized and planned from the beginning.”
“First of all I want to say ‘Thank You for Everything,’ without this training I really seriously doubt I would have been able to run a half marathon. The parts I really liked about the training were the encouragement, training information, and the wonderful people I met.”
“Overall great, would not change a thing. Mileages were great and the variety from week to week was great. What you guys are doing out there is great for the running community in Raleigh.
“I liked that I could totally suck as a runner and still feel very successful when the program began. It started at a comfortable distance and then slowly built up.”
“It totally prepared me for City of Oaks, kept me motivated and ensured that I got at least 2 runs in a week! Loved the group aspect. It really passed the time and it was really nice meeting new people with a common interest and goal.”
“I liked the structured program and options for the days that we weren’t running with the group. I also enjoyed the camaraderie among the group including the friendships and the common goal among the group.”
“I don't want it to end. I really enjoyed running with my new found friends and I know I won't run as often now that it is over.”
“That this was offered! Really enjoyed that there were so many pace groups so that I could find a group at my pace. Mentors were super helpful and loved that the program took care of all of the planning for me! All I had to do was show up and run - awesome!”
“That your program can get you to a half marathon, INJURY free! I have tried before and I failed. I feel like I super exceeded this time around!”
“The experience of training with the group--the mix of newer and more seasoned runners--the marbles--the variety of running routes--hill running prepared me well for the City of Oaks race--encouragement on the long runs!”
“I was telling my Dad this was hands-down the best $90 I have ever spent. This training program and all the people involved were so incredibly positive and wonderful. I got so much more than running from this.”
Did you benefit from the race simulation? Was it a good training tool for the program?
“I am so glad I was able to participate in the race simulation. It was awesome practice and really pushed over the edge as far as our preparation went. Nothing I will ever run going forward will be as tough as that course!
“The race simulation gave me an opportunity to see how I’d do in back to back Half Marathons. I knew I had back-to-back races in November and December and this gave me an opportunity to gauge my success. The finisher medal was a “very nice” touch and a nice congratulatory symbol of success for many who had never completed a half marathon prior to the simulation.”
“Ok, during race simulation I hated it because it was really tough. But! I think it was a HUGE help preparing for the race. I did City of Oaks and it felt easy compared to race simulation day. It was very reassuring to go into race day thinking ‘I've already done this once. I can do this again.’ SO glad you had race simulation day!! And I LOVED the medals!! Very cool.”
“Oh yeah, the race simulation was awesome. It was a good training tool, it taught me to take recovery seriously. The finisher's medals were awesome! I actually think it is cooler than the City of Oaks medal!”
“The race simulation was absolutely awesome. The medals were (so far) better than any I’ve actually gotten in any actual race. The course was a butt-kicker, but more than prepared even those who did City of Oaks. I had forgotten how much easier City of Oaks was than the simulation course (except for Clark Ave) but was pleasantly surprised on race morning when I blew my PR out of the water by 7 minutes.”
“It was really great. It gave me so much confidence going into and during my 'real' race (as if simulation wasn't real enough..) that I had already completed a harder 13.1 course. I was insanely proud of myself and I wore the medal to work the following Monday. The medals were awesome.”
